Physicians and researchers from the Philippines, India, and Malaysia will discuss emerging therapies, cellular science, and the evolving role of regenerative medicine in patient care.

As medical science continues to explore new approaches to tissue repair, healing, and disease management, the Philippine Society for Regenerative Medicine (PSRM) is bringing together local and international experts to discuss the possibilities—and challenges—shaping the field.

The Society will hold its 1st Annual Convention on October 21–22, 2026, at Discovery Primea Makati, under the theme “Leading Innovation in Philippine Regenerative Medicine.” The two-day gathering will feature discussions on emerging regenerative therapies, cell-based science, and their potential applications across different areas of healthcare.

Ahead of the convention, PSRM will hold a press conference on October 12 at the same venue, where Society leaders will introduce key topics and provide insights into developments in regenerative medicine.
Understanding the science behind regenerative medicine
Regenerative medicine is an evolving area of healthcare that investigates how cells, biological materials, and related approaches may help support the body’s repair and restoration processes.

Researchers are studying these approaches across a range of fields, including wound care, musculoskeletal conditions, neurological health, and reproductive medicine. Developments in stem cell research, cell-based therapies, and cell-free biological approaches are also contributing to scientific understanding of their potential therapeutic uses.

However, the promise of new treatments must be considered alongside the need for rigorous research, patient safety, and evidence demonstrating whether an approach is effective for a particular condition.

Leading the convention’s scientific discussions are PSRM President Dr. Quincy P. Raya, MD, and Vice President Dr. Daryl Joel “Butch” Dumdum, MD, DFM, FSRM.

Dr. Raya will present “Emerging Regenerative Therapies for Autism, Parkinson’s Disease and Osteoarthritis: From Symptom Management to Targeted Cellular Repair.” Her lecture will examine research involving mesenchymal stem cell infusion and behavioral and EEG outcomes in autism spectrum disorder, ultrasound-guided intra-articular injection of extracellular matrix for knee osteoarthritis, and the potential role of the mesenchymal stem cell secretome in Parkinson’s disease.

The presentation will explore how these approaches are being investigated and why further research is necessary to establish their safety, effectiveness, and appropriate clinical applications. Emerging regenerative interventions should not be regarded as established treatments without sufficient supporting evidence.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dumdum will deliver “Cells That Heal, Cells That Kill,” exploring the scientific relationships among mesenchymal stromal cells, natural killer cells, and extracellular vesicles.

His presentation will examine their roles in tissue repair, immune regulation, and immune surveillance, while addressing important considerations in translating laboratory research into clinical practice. These include biological product identity, potency, safety, and how treatments may interact with individual patients.
International perspectives on emerging therapies
The convention will feature experts from the Philippines, India, and Malaysia, creating opportunities for professional exchange and discussion on developments in regenerative medicine.

Among the featured speakers is PSRM Vice President External Dr. Maria Romualdez Tan, who will discuss regenerative strategies and their potential applications in reproductive medicine.

PSRM founding board member Dr. Acel Pauline Ampong-Chicano, a reconstructive surgeon and wound care specialist, will explore regenerative approaches to complex wounds, including their potential role in supporting tissue repair and wound management.

Representing the international community, Dr. Prabhu Mishra, PhD, Founder-President of the International Association of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, will discuss platelet-rich plasma (PRP), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), stromal vascular fraction (SVF), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), exosomes, and secretomes. His presentation will examine these approaches from a research perspective and consider their investigation across different medical indications.

Dr. Lan Leong Chung of Celgen Clinic in Malaysia will also discuss the classification, characteristics, and clinical applications of mesenchymal stem cells and stromal vascular fraction.

Together, the presentations will provide attendees with opportunities to examine current scientific developments, discuss clinical considerations, and better understand the evidence needed to support responsible medical innovation.
Building a community committed to responsible innovation
Beyond the scientific program, the convention will include the conferment and induction of PSRM members, marking a milestone in the Society’s efforts to strengthen its professional community.

Through its annual gathering, PSRM aims to encourage collaboration among clinicians, researchers, and specialists while supporting informed discussions about the potential and limitations of regenerative medicine.

As interest in innovative healthcare approaches grows, the distinction between promising research and proven treatment remains essential. Continued scientific evaluation, transparent communication, and patient safety will be central to determining how regenerative medicine may responsibly contribute to future healthcare.

The “Leading Innovation in Philippine Regenerative Medicine” convention will begin at 9:00 a.m. on October 21, 2026, and continue through October 22 at Discovery Primea, 6749 Ayala Avenue, Makati City.
