A day filled with art immersion and uninterrupted contemplation unfolded at the Pintó Art Museum. Since its public opening in 2010, this sprawling 2-hectare complex in Antipolo has evolved into a dynamic hub, uniting artists and art enthusiasts from all corners of the Philippines.

The visionary behind this cultural haven is the esteemed Filipino neurologist and arts patron, Dr. Joven Cuanang. His support for local artists since the mid-’80s has transformed Pintó Art Museum into a stage where Filipino and international artists can showcase their creativity.

The name “Pintó” itself is derived from the Tagalog word for “door.” Beyond catering to artists and art connoisseurs, Pintó Art Museum serves as an open invitation for everyone to explore new horizons, opening doors to fresh possibilities.

The museum boasts over 300 modern paintings, sculptures, and art installations by diverse local artists, artfully displayed across seven galleries. Within the expansive property, you’ll also discover two museums, an arts school, a charming café, plazas, pavilions, lush gardens, an arboretum, and art at every turn.

Recently, I received an invitation to an art exhibit opening on a Sunday, and despite the substantial distance from my home in Novaliches, Quezon City, to Antipolo City, I eagerly embarked on the journey. It was a welcome return to museum life after the pandemic, allowing my family and me to immerse ourselves in various art forms while relishing the open spaces, natural surroundings, and fresh air.

Though time was limited, we chose to spend our precious two hours in the expansive Gallery 7, the museum’s latest addition, inaugurated in December 2019 to mark Dr. Cuanang’s 80th birthday. During our visit, I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Cuanang, a prominent neurologist and a familiar face from my days covering health-related events at a business newspaper.

In addition to this delightful encounter, we met abstract expressionism artist Billie Jean, who was inaugurating her exhibit at Ilustrado 2, running concurrently with Lynyrd Paras’s exhibit at Ilustrado 1.

Billie Jean’s exhibition, aptly titled “Undisturbed Gaze,” offers a refreshing departure from the predominantly dark, massive installations and artworks that occupy Gallery 7. Ilustrado 2 transforms into a vibrant haven where bright colors, masterfully employed pastels, and neon hues take center stage. Billie Jean’s abstract works exude feminine vitality, brought to life through rhythmic energy, and comprise a suite of captivating sculptures and paintings. This exhibition marks her fourth solo show, following her successful exhibitions at Art Fair 2023 under Art Verite Gallery and Secret Fresh Gallery Ortigas in March 2023.

Art critic Carlomar Archangel Daoana aptly captured the essence of Billie Jean’s art, describing it as possessing “a robust aesthetic that mesmerizes the viewer with her artworks that’s multi-layered, lush, and vibrating.” Her creations convey movement, expansion, and prolific growth, providing a sense of unity and wholeness through the dance of organic lines.

Billie Jean herself embodies happiness and hope. Her infectious energy, warm smile, and accommodating demeanor redefine the image of an artist. Even her sculptures seem poised to leap into the surrounding space, mirroring her boundless vitality.

“Undisturbed Gaze” commands our attention, inviting us to appreciate the interplay of lines and colors without disturbance. Billie Jean shared during our interview that she focused on her art, especially during the pandemic, to maintain her happiness and inner peace amidst global challenges. Through her art, she encourages us to delve into our own depths and encounter the world’s beauty through her vibrant creations.

Billie Jean’s immediate plans include more solo exhibitions and aspiring to showcase her work in prime exhibition spaces on her bucket list. Given her dedication and talent, her place under the sun is well within reach, akin to her industry idol, Elmer Borlongan, one of Pintó Art Museum’s original artists.

If you find yourself in Antipolo City, be sure to visit the Pintó Art Museum at 1 Sierra Madre St., Grand Heights. Take the time to revel in the world of art, delve into Filipino heritage and history, and capture Instagram-worthy moments throughout the vast property. Don’t miss Billie Jean’s “Undisturbed Gaze,” on display until October 7, 2023, at Ilustrado 2, Gallery 7.
