Dr./BGen. Antonio Laperal Tamayo receives Hospital CEO of the Year Excellence Award as PHMC-LP celebrates five decades of service to Southern Metro Manila
Fifty years ago, Perpetual Help Medical Center–Las Piñas (PHMC-LP) began with a simple purpose: to provide healthcare to a growing community.
What started in 1976 as a modest 50-bed community clinic has since grown into a tertiary healthcare institution serving patients and families across Southern Metro Manila.
As the medical center celebrates its 50th anniversary, its founder, CEO and chairman, Dr./BGen. Antonio Laperal Tamayo, has also been recognized by Hospital Management Asia (HMA) as the recipient of the Hospital CEO of the Year – Excellence Award.
For Tamayo, however, the recognition is not simply a personal achievement. He considers it a reflection of the people who have helped build and sustain the medical center through five decades.
“This recognition reflects 50 years of dedication and collective effort from our medical staff and support teams,” Tamayo said.
His words point to a story much bigger than one individual—the story of doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, support personnel and countless people who have helped PHMC-LP remain a place where patients can seek care through different stages of their lives.
Five Decades of Growing With the Community
Over the years, PHMC-LP has expanded its capabilities alongside the changing healthcare needs of the communities it serves.
Today, the medical center provides specialized services in areas including cardiovascular medicine, oncology, kidney transplantation, neuroscience and minimally invasive surgery.
For families, that growth represents more than new departments or medical equipment. It means having access to increasingly specialized care closer to home.
Tamayo said the institution’s vision has always extended beyond simply building a hospital.
“We are building more than a hospital, but a sustainable, future-ready healthcare ecosystem,” he said, describing an institution that continues to advance its clinical capabilities, embrace new technologies and respond to the evolving needs of the communities it serves.
Ultimately, he added, the goal is to build an institution that “will continue to care for generations to come.”
Bringing Technology Closer to Patients
That commitment is reflected in PHMC-LP’s continuing investments in medical technology.
In 2026, the medical center introduced two major additions to its specialized medical capabilities.
The Symbia Pro.Specta Advanced Molecular Imaging System is designed to help medical practitioners evaluate physiological disease functions, supporting more precise cancer diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
PHMC-LP also introduced the da Vinci Xi Fourth-generation Surgical System, which supports advanced robot-assisted minimally invasive procedures by providing surgeons with enhanced dexterity, range and precision.
The medical center plans to introduce additional medical technologies later this year as it continues expanding its diagnostic and therapeutic services.
For patients, these innovations represent another chapter in the evolution of a healthcare institution that has spent half a century adapting to the changing landscape of medicine.
Caring Beyond the Hospital Walls
PHMC-LP’s journey has also included a focus on quality, sustainability, workplace safety and preparedness.
The medical center says it is the first hospital in the Philippines to earn a Quadruple ISO-Certified Integrated Management System, covering environmental management through ISO 14001:2025, healthcare quality management through ISO 7101:2023, energy management through ISO 50001:2018, and occupational health and safety through ISO 45001:2018.
It also serves as the country’s first AFP Affiliated Reserve Medical Center and first Air Reserve Hospital, strengthening its role in national preparedness and healthcare response during emergencies and national crises.
Looking Ahead After 50 Years
For an institution that began with 50 beds in 1976, reaching its 50th year is both a milestone and a reminder of how much healthcare has changed.
But at the center of that transformation remains the same fundamental purpose: caring for people.
As PHMC-LP enters its next chapter, its story is no longer only about how a small community clinic became a major medical center. It is about an institution that has grown alongside the families and communities it serves—and continues to invest in the people, technology and standards needed to care for future generations.
The Hospital CEO of the Year recognition for Tamayo comes at a fitting moment: as PHMC-LP celebrates five decades not only of growth, but of service, resilience and a continuing commitment to caring for the community.
