Banking partners restore Makati’s Tsuruki-en Garden, strengthening a decade-long collaboration while creating a renewed public space for the community

Security Bank and MUFG Bank, Manila Branch Ltd. (MUFG) are marking a decade of partnership with the renewal of Tsuruki-en (Crane and Turtle) Japanese Garden at Washington SyCip Park, giving one of Makati’s distinctive green spaces a refreshed setting for the public.

The restoration reflects the continuing collaboration between the two financial institutions while reinforcing their shared commitment to supporting communities in the Philippines.

Originally unveiled in 2017 by Security Bank, MUFG and the late Washington SyCip, Tsuruki-en has become a recognizable feature of Washington SyCip Park and a shared space for office workers, residents, families and visitors seeking a quiet break within Makati’s busy business district.

Renewing a Shared Urban Space

Located amid Makati’s commercial center, the garden provides a contrast to the surrounding office towers and city activity. Its renewal brings new life to the space while preserving its Japanese-inspired character.

The refreshed garden draws inspiration from wa, the Japanese concept of harmony and balance. Stone, water, greenery and carefully arranged landscapes work together to create an environment designed for reflection and relaxation.

Sustainable materials sourced in the Philippines were also incorporated into the refreshed space, further connecting the garden’s Japanese inspiration with its local setting.

Security Bank President and CEO Victor Lee said the garden represents an important part of the partnership between the two institutions.

“The Tsuruki-en Garden is a special place that brings a sense of calm and reflection to the middle of a busy city,” Lee said. “As we celebrate ten years of partnership with MUFG, we are proud to renew this space and share it with the public. We hope more people will discover and enjoy this unique corner of Makati.”

A Decade of Partnership

The garden’s renewal coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Security Bank–MUFG partnership, highlighting a collaboration that has developed alongside the institutions’ presence in the Philippine financial sector.

For MUFG, the restoration also represents an opportunity to commemorate the relationship through a tangible community initiative.

“Refreshing Tsuruki-en is a simple but meaningful way to care for the city we share,” said Masami Yoshitake, Country Head of MUFG Bank, Manila Branch. “We are honoured to mark this milestone with Security Bank by helping preserve a place where people can find calm, enjoy nature and feel welcome.”

Yoshitake added that the garden reflects the care, respect and shared purpose that underpin the partnership and MUFG’s commitment to the Philippines.

Creating Value Beyond the Workplace

Representatives from Security Bank, MUFG, the Makati Central Estate Association (MACEA) and other partners gathered for the garden’s rededication and walkthrough following the renewal.

While located within one of the country’s busiest business districts, Tsuruki-en offers a different kind of value—an accessible space where people can step away from the pace of the city.

The renewed garden is now open to welcome visitors looking for a quiet place to pause, walk among the greenery or simply experience a Japanese-inspired landscape in the middle of Makati.

For Security Bank and MUFG, the refreshed Tsuruki-en Garden serves as a physical reminder of their decade-long partnership while providing a lasting space that can be enjoyed by the wider Makati community.
